Fishing the The Copper River

 

It flows crystal clear through a treed valley. Flat bottom jet boats are the method of transportation for the river. The Copper River, which was the first Alaskan river to be categorized as a “world class trout stream”, is fished from gravel bars in waders. Rainbow Trout are abundant from the start of the season in June through the end of September. There are numerous opportunities for dry fly fishing during the spring until the arrival of the sockeye salmon in July. Streamers, nymphs and even mouse patterns work well. In July, the sockeye salmon arrive in numbers that cannot be imagined without actually witnessing it. At times the river runs black from bank to bank, chock full of salmon.

From August through the rest of September the rainbow fishing gets better and better. As the salmon die and lure the big rainbows from Lake Iliamna into the Copper, flesh and egg imitation pattern flies become the preferred offering.

It is designated a fly fishing only river. If you don’t fly fish you will learn in about a half a day with a little instruction.  While you enjoy fishing, you'll also be treated to pristine views, frequent bear and wildlife sightings, and an experience only remote Alaska can provide. All of our guides are CPR and First Aid certified.
